Tips for Distance Learning
- Set up a workspace. Have your child's device, charger, books, materials, paper and pencils in this space. Good options for this space could be a home office, the kitchen table or a desk in your room. Please work from a desk or table while attending virtual classes and doing school work whenever possible.
- Stick to a schedule. There is flexibility built into the schedule, but the more you can stick to a schedule the better. This includes participating in live sessions as well as doing your independent work.
- Use a to-do list. Print a copy of the weekly schedule (compare your copy to the online schedule each day in case any slight changes are made during the week). Use the schedule like a "to-do" list and have your child cross items off the list when they are completed.
- Focus on one assignment at a time. When doing independent tasks, focus on one assignment at a time. After each task is complete (or maybe halfway through for longer tasks), take a five to ten minute break. Good activities for a break include eating a snack, or doing some physical activities like shooting baskets or running in place.
- Minimize distractions. When watching a video lesson, turn off the tv or music, close distracting tabs on devices, and find a quiet work space.
- Keep track of questions. Students and parents may not always be able to ask a question in the moment, especially during independent work times. If appropriate, students can ask the question when it arises during the live lesson, or students can save questions for a one-on-one check in time if not urgent. Parents may follow up with the teacher by email or sign-up for a slot during the teacher's office hours.
- Don't panic! As we navigate this new learning plan together, students (and parents) may experience moments when things do not go as expected. Technology may fail, a link may not work, or an assignment may be unclear. In these moments, please be patient and remain calm. While there may not be an immediate solution, teachers, administrators, and the tech team will be flexible and supportive in these moments and will work with students and parents to solve any issues that arise.
